Expertise, experience and a shared passion for exceptional care
At The Old Vicarage, we believe that great care comes from constantly asking ourselves one simple question: “Can we do better?”
Our Clinical Excellence Board brings together a group of experienced professionals who share our commitment to providing the very best possible care for our residents. Between them, they bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise across health, wellbeing, dementia care, clinical practice, hospitality and quality of life.
The Board provides guidance, challenge and fresh thinking, helping us to continually learn, develop and raise the standards of care we provide. They work alongside our wonderful team at The Old Vicarage, ensuring that our approach is thoughtful, evidence-based and, above all, centred around the individual.
But clinical excellence isn’t just about policies and procedures. It’s about people. It’s about understanding what matters to each resident, listening to families, supporting our team and making sure that every person who lives with us feels safe, respected, valued and genuinely cared for.
We are incredibly fortunate to have such a talented group of people supporting The Old Vicarage, and we would love you to meet them.
Dr Dan Mitchener
Lead Gerontology Consultant

Dr Dan Mitchener brings a wealth of experience in caring for older people, having worked across hospital medicine, general practice and geriatric medicine. Based in Oxfordshire, Dan has developed a particular interest in frailty and helping older people with more complex healthcare needs.
With both GP and physician experience, Dan brings a broad perspective to the care he provides. His career has included working at consultant level in the development of ambulatory care services, giving him a deep understanding of how best to support people to remain well and independent.
We are delighted to have Dan’s experience and expertise helping us continually develop and strengthen the clinical care we provide at The Old Vicarage.
Dr Lucy Foster
General Practitioner

Dr Lucy Foster is an experienced GP who has spent much of her career building relationships with the people she cares for. After many years working in the NHS, including within busy A&E departments, Lucy moved into private healthcare, where she has developed a particular passion for long-term, trusting relationships with patients.
Lucy believes that good healthcare is about much more than treating an illness. It is about taking the time to listen, understand the individual and make sure every aspect of their health is looked after with care and attention.
We are very fortunate to have Lucy’s expertise, warmth and commitment as part of our Clinical Excellence Board.
James Maitland-Cook
Non-Executive Director & Consultant

James brings extensive experience across the senior living and longevity sectors, together with a real passion for creating exceptional experiences for older people.
He co-founded Innovative Aged Care and later Loveday & Co, where he served as Managing Director and Chief Marketing Officer. His passion for older people and dementia care is also deeply personal, having seen the impact of dementia on both of his grandparents.
At Hanning Homes, James provides strategic oversight and helps us think about how we can continually develop and improve our services. He advises on business performance, service development and growth, while keeping a strong focus on exceptional care, hospitality and the resident experience.
James holds an MBA and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, but it is his genuine passion for creating wonderful places for older people to live that makes him such a valuable part of our Clinical Excellence Board.
